Privacy Policy
This page explains what information TutorInMontreal collects, why, how long it is kept, and how to have it deleted. It is written to be read, not to be survived.
The short version
This site sets no cookies unless you say yes. Visits are counted with a tool that uses none at all and cannot recognise you. I do advertise on Google, so a banner asks whether you are willing to accept one advertising cookie that tells me which ad brought you here — and if you decline, or simply ignore it, nothing is set and Google is never contacted. Nothing on this site works differently either way. If you never contact me, nothing that identifies you is stored anywhere.
What is collected
If you send a message
The contact form collects your name, email address, phone number if you give one, and your message. It also records which page you sent it from, so I know which worksheet or section prompted it. This is used only to reply to you and to arrange tutoring. It is never sold, rented or shared for marketing.
If you message on WhatsApp instead, the conversation is held in your WhatsApp account and mine, under Meta’s own terms and privacy policy.
If you just read the site
Visits are measured with Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool that uses no cookies and stores no identifier on your device. It records the page address, the site that referred you, your country, and your browser and device type. It does not record your IP address, and it cannot follow you to other websites or recognise you when you return on another day.
Clicks on a worksheet PDF, on a WhatsApp button, and on the send button of the contact form are counted as anonymous events, so I can tell which worksheets are actually useful. No personal information is attached to them.
Only if you accept advertising cookies
I run ads on Google, and I need to know which ones lead to an actual student rather than to a click. If you press Accept on the banner, Google’s advertising tag loads and sets one cookie on this domain, so that if you later send a message it can be matched back to the ad you arrived from.
Until you press it, the tag is not loaded at all. This is worth being precise about: it is not loaded-but-switched-off. The script is never requested, so Google is not told that you opened this page, and no cookie of any kind is written. Declining and ignoring the banner have exactly the same effect.
You can change your mind whenever you like — Cookie choices at the foot of any page brings the question back. One caveat I would rather state than hide: withdrawing consent stops any further use, but it cannot reach back and erase a cookie already sitting in your browser. Your browser’s own settings can, and that is the only thing that can.
If you arrived from an ad
An ad click carries an identifier in the link. This site keeps it for the length of your visit only — it is discarded when you close the tab — and attaches it to your message if you send one, so I can tell which ad paid for the enquiry. It is not a cookie, it is not shared with anyone, and on its own it identifies the click rather than you. This happens whatever you answered on the banner, because it never leaves this site.
Fonts and other requests
The typefaces, images and PDFs on this site are served from this site’s own domain. No third-party font or social-media script runs on any page, and there is no analytics script from Google on any page. The only third-party script that can ever run here is the advertising tag described above, and only after you have said yes to it.
Who else handles it
- Netlify hosts the website and stores contact-form submissions. Its servers are in the United States.
- Umami Cloud stores the anonymous analytics described above. This site uses its European Union region, so that data is held in the EU and is covered by European data-protection law.
- Google, only if you accepted advertising cookies. It then learns that a browser which saw or clicked one of my ads reached this site, and whether it went on to contact me. It is not told your name, your email or what you typed. Its servers are in the United States and other countries.
- WhatsApp / Meta, only if you choose to message that way.
These providers therefore store information outside Québec, which Québec law requires me to tell you. Netlify, Umami and WhatsApp are not permitted to use what they hold for their own purposes. Google is the exception, and it is the reason the banner exists: an advertising network does use what it collects for its own advertising, and no wording on my part changes that — which is exactly why nothing reaches it unless you agree first. The only information that identifies you — what you type into the contact form — goes to Netlify alone; what Umami holds cannot identify you, and Google is never sent your message, your name or your email.
How long it is kept
Contact-form submissions are kept while your enquiry is active and for up to 24 months after we last spoke, then deleted. Tutoring enquiries often resume months later — a student who writes in June may start in September — which is why the window is that long rather than shorter.
Analytics data is anonymous and is kept for up to 6 months by the analytics provider before it is discarded.
The advertising cookie, if you accepted it, expires on its own after about 90 days. Your answer to the banner is remembered in your browser’s own storage — not in a cookie, and never sent anywhere — until you change it or clear your browsing data.
Your rights, and how to use them
You can ask to see the information held about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. You can also withdraw a consent you previously gave. There is no form to fill in and no reason you need to give.
Message me directly on WhatsApp and say what you want done. I handle these myself and reply within a day, usually sooner.

Who is responsible
Marius is the person responsible for the protection of personal information for TutorInMontreal, as Québec’s privacy law requires every business to designate. That is the same person who answers the WhatsApp number above and who reads every enquiry.
If this page changes
If what this site collects ever changes — for example if advertising or cookies are introduced — this page is updated in the same change, and you would be asked for consent before any cookie was set.
