Secondary 2 is where algebra becomes something you manipulate rather than something you translate. Monomials become polynomials; expressions are added, subtracted, multiplied by a constant and divided by a monomial; and the first-degree equation acquires general methods instead of one trick per shape. Alongside it, the linear function arrives with a rate of change and a y-intercept that both mean something in the situation they came from.

The geometry doubles in size this year and nearly all of the growth is in solids — area and volume for prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cubes, and the decomposable and truncated shapes built from them — so it ships as five sets rather than one. Missing measurements get a set of their own, because working backwards from an area or a volume to a length is a different skill from computing forwards, and it is the one that shows up in problems.

Proportional reasoning is the year's quiet backbone. Ratios, rates, percentages and direct versus inverse proportionality run underneath the algebra and the geometry both, and a student who is shaky there will find the trouble surfacing somewhere else entirely.
