What University Business Math covers
This is the mathematics a commerce or management program asks for in first year, and it is taught in two halves. The first half is finite mathematics: the linear, quadratic, exponential and logarithmic functions that model cost, revenue, demand and growth; the mathematics of finance, from simple interest to annuities, sinking funds and loan amortization; systems of equations solved by row reduction and by the inverse matrix, with the input-output model of an economy; graphical linear programming in two variables; and counting and probability up to conditional probability and independence. Most of the work is turning a business situation into the right equation before solving it.
The second half is a first course in calculus, built around business questions rather than geometry. Limits and the derivative lead straight to marginal cost, revenue and profit; the differentiation rules lead to related rates and the elasticity of demand; curve analysis leads to maximum profit and minimum average cost; and the integral closes the course with net change, consumer and producer surplus, and the Lorenz curve with the Gini index. There are no trigonometric functions anywhere, and substitution is the only integration technique.
The course stands on Secondary 5 mathematics only. It is a first calculus course that runs beside CEGEP Calculus I and II rather than after them, so limits and derivatives are taught from the start. Determinants, vectors, and lines and planes in space belong to the CEGEP Linear Algebra sets; random variables, distributions and inference belong to University Introductory Statistics. The courses that carry this material at university split it differently — some teach the finite half and the calculus as two courses, some pair matrices with probability, and some add a separate integral calculus course.
