What CEGEP Linear Algebra covers
The full title of competency 0M04 is linear algebra and vector geometry, and the second half is the half that catches calculus-trained students out. Matrices, systems, inverses and determinants are the algebra; vectors, their three products, and the lines and planes built out of them are the geometry — and the geometry is where a student who has spent two courses differentiating suddenly has to visualise instead.
The ministerial standard is unusually specific here, and the sets are shaped by its lists. A line has three equation forms — vector, parametric and symmetric — and a plane has three, vector, parametric and cartesian; a system has three solution methods, Gauss, Gauss-Jordan and the inverse matrix; and there are exactly three products of vectors, the dot product, the cross product and the scalar triple product. Those enumerations are why this course splits into seven sets rather than four.
Whether your course is numbered 201-NYC-05 or 201-SN4-RE, the content is the same competency. This is the concrete course: everything lives in the plane and in space. Abstract vector spaces, and eigenvalues and eigenvectors, are outside 0M04 and appear nowhere in these sets.
