Secondary 3 is the last year every student takes the same mathematics, and it is doing two jobs at once: finishing Cycle One's arithmetic and opening the ground the option years are built on. Real numbers complete the number system, the laws of exponents and scientific notation arrive, and factoring appears for the first time — a common factor, and grouping.

Functions become explicit here. The linear function gets its properties, its inverse and its graph; the inverse-variation and piecewise functions are introduced informally; and systems of two first-degree equations turn up inside the geometry, where finding a missing measurement can mean solving for two unknowns at once. Statistics widens from the mean to the median, the mode, the quartiles, the box-and-whisker plot and the scatter plot.
