Should my teen take AP Calculus in high school? Questions to ask
AP Calculus is worth it when the course is well taught, the exam is properly organised, and the extra work does not come out of your teen's Secondary 5 math. All three depend on how the school runs it, so the useful step is to ask before signing up. Here are the questions to ask, and what the College Board's own pages say about the exam and the score.
What AP Calculus AB is
AP (Advanced Placement) courses and their exams are set by the College Board. It describes AP Calculus AB as the equivalent of “a first-semester college calculus course devoted to topics in differential and integral calculus.” The course runs in eight units, from limits to applications of integration, and ends in one exam in May.
For a Quebec student it is best treated as an addition to Secondary 5 math, not a replacement. Secondary 4 and 5 math come in three options: Cultural, Social and Technical (CST), Technical and Scientific (TS), and Science (SN). The ministry's CEGEP Science program lists Secondary V Mathematics in the TS or Science option among its admission conditions, with Secondary V Chemistry and Physics. An AP course does not change that list.
The exam, in brief
- Date: Monday, May 10, 2027. The 2027 AP exams run in schools over two weeks, May 3–7 and May 10–14.
- Shape: 3 hours 10 minutes, in two halves of equal weight: 42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 40 minutes, then 6 free-response questions in 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Calculator: a graphing calculator is required in some parts and not allowed in others. The parts without one carry more than two thirds of the score.
- Format: a hybrid digital exam. Students answer the multiple choice in the College Board's testing app and write the free-response answers by hand in a paper booklet.
- Score: 1 to 5. On the College Board's score scale, 5 is “extremely well qualified”, 4 “very well qualified”, 3 “qualified”, 2 “possibly qualified” and 1 “no recommendation”. Scores for the 2027 exams come out in July 2027.
What a score is worth afterwards
There is no single answer, and the College Board says so plainly: “Each college makes its own decisions about what scores it will grant credit or placement for.” Credit means the course counts towards the credits needed to graduate; placement means the student may skip the equivalent course. Universities outside the United States also use AP scores for admission, credit, scholarships or placement, each in its own way.
For a Quebec student, CEGEP comes after Secondary 5 and university after that, so there are two places to ask. Ask each one directly, for the year your teen would start, and keep the answer in writing.
What depends on no policy is the calculus itself. CEGEP Calculus I covers much the same ground as the first five AP units (the AP Calculus tutoring page compares the two), so a teen who learns it well in high school starts CEGEP ahead, whatever the score.
Questions to ask the school
Who teaches it
- Who teaches the course, and how many times have they taught it?
- Is it an authorized AP course? A course labelled “AP” goes through the College Board's AP Course Audit, and authorized courses are listed on its official AP Course Ledger.
- How many periods a week does it get, and will all eight units be finished before the exam in May?
- Last year, how many students started, finished and wrote the exam?
How the exam is organised
- Does the school give the exam itself, on the College Board's date? A student in a school's AP course registers through that school: the teacher or AP coordinator hands out a join code, the student joins the class section online, and the coordinator orders the exam.
- Is writing the exam required, or optional? Does the course mark depend on it?
- Who pays the exam fee, and is there a school charge on top? The College Board sets a fee per exam, and its fee page says a school may ask for more to cover proctoring and administration.
- When do you have to decide? This school year's ordering deadline is November 13, 2026. Dropping an exam after that date costs a smaller cancellation charge rather than the full fee. Ask for the school's own date as well.
- Will students practise in the digital format before May?
What it pushes out of the timetable
- Does AP Calculus take the place of an option, a study period, or time outside class hours?
- If it replaces an option, which one? For a teen aiming at CEGEP Science, Secondary V Chemistry and Physics are on the admission list beside math, so neither should be the one that gives way.
- Is Secondary 5 math still taken in full, in the TS or SN option?
How it fits beside Secondary 5 math
- Which topics will the AP course need before the Secondary 5 class reaches them? The College Board expects students to have studied algebra, geometry, trigonometry, analytic geometry and the elementary functions, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric among them. Ask how the teacher bridges any gap.
- How much homework a week, across both courses together?
- If the load proves too much in the fall, can a student leave the AP course, and until when?
The mark to protect is Secondary 5 math. It is the course CEGEP Science names among its admission conditions. If the first report card shows that mark slipping, that is the moment to talk about the AP course, not May.
Is your teen ready for it?
Signs that say more than any single mark:
- Functions from Secondary 4 (reading a graph, changing a rule, solving the equation) come without a fight.
- Homework gets done without being chased.
- They can explain a solution in sentences. The College Board lists “justifying reasoning and solutions” among the course's skills.
- They want to do it, rather than signing up to please someone.

When outside help makes sense
Help does the most good at a few predictable moments:
- The summer before, if functions or trigonometry are still shaky. Those gaps are far easier to close before the course starts.
- After the first unit test, if the mark is well below your teen's usual math mark. Limits and derivatives carry everything after them.
- Before the November decision about writing the exam, for an honest reading of where your teen stands.
- From March to May, for exam practice, above all the calculator-free free response.
If you go that way, my sessions open with a written diagnostic so the time goes to what is really missing. Practice between sessions, if you want it, is set on the exact topic and marked before the next one, and a written recap goes to whoever books after every session. Sessions are in person in Montreal or on Zoom. Before anything else, the free AP Calculus AB worksheets, one per unit, are a quick way to see where things stand.
Thinking about a tutor? I offer AP Calculus AB tutoring and exam preparation in Montreal, in person or online. Sessions start with a short written diagnostic, and a written recap goes to whoever books after every session.
